Domnița Bălașa Church

Domnița Bălașa Church bears the name of Constantin Brâncoveanu's daughter who, together with her husband, the ban Manolache Lambrino, built a first church near the Dâmbovița in 1743–1744, and in 1750–1751 a second one, dedicated to the Ascension, together with a school and an almshouse. Today's building is the fourth on this site: it was built between 1881 and 1885, after the previous church, rebuilt by Safta Brâncoveanu after the 1838 earthquake, had been ruined by floods. The plans bear the signatures of the architects Carol Benesch and Alexandru Orăscu, and King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth attended the laying of the foundation stone in June 1881.
