Batiștei Church

Batiștei Church, on the street of the same name, succeeds a wooden church built here under Matei Basarab and mentioned in documents in 1660. According to Nicolae Iorga, the name comes from Baptista Vevelli, an adviser to Radu Mihnea, or, by another explanation, from the ground trampled by the cattle that grazed nearby. Today's masonry church was built in 1763 by Manciu, head of the butchers' guild, helped by his family and by other residents of the neighborhood. In poor condition by around 1880, it was extensively rebuilt in 1929–1930 after an 1869 watercolor by the painter Preziosi.
