Popa Rusu Church

Popa Rusu Church is one of Bucharest's neighborhood churches built by founders of modest means. Today's brick building was erected in March 1813 by Manolache, head of the harabagii (carters), and his wife Ilinca, whose founders' portrait can be seen in the pronaos. It originally had two equal towers, over the nave and over the pronaos. It was repaired in 1867 and 1890, and between 1918 and 1925, having few parishioners, it served as a branch of the Popa Chițu church. After the 1940 earthquake the towers were rebuilt in 1943, and the bell tower was moved above the former porch.
