St. Basil the Great Church – Victoria

St. Basil the Great Church on Calea Victoriei gave its name to an old neighborhood on Podul Mogoșoaiei. A first church, probably of wood, appears in the city's 1804 census, and in 1815 it was dedicated to Mărcuța Monastery. Destroyed by the 1838 earthquake, the church was rebuilt in masonry in 1847, under Gheorghe Bibescu, almost entirely at the expense of the căminar (a boyar rank) Toma Baltă. Since 2011 it has also been dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and it keeps a fragment of the wood of the Holy Cross.
