Admiral Vasile Urseanu Astronomical Observatory

The “Admiral Vasile Urseanu” Astronomical Observatory, on Lascăr Catargiu Boulevard, is Bucharest's only public observatory. The building was erected between 1908 and 1910 at the commission of Admiral Vasile Urseanu, to a design by Ion D. Berindey, and equipped with a 150 mm Zeiss refracting telescope, at the time the third largest in the country. After the admiral's death in 1926, his widow donated it to the city, and after 1933 it housed the municipal art gallery. Since 1950 it has again served as an observatory; today it belongs to the Bucharest Municipality Museum.
