Assan House

The Assan House was built in 1906–1914 for the engineer and industrialist Bazil G. Assan, to plans by the architect Ion D. Berindey, in the French Neoclassical style. Since 1945 it has been the Scientists' House of the Romanian Academy, and until 1989 it also housed the Parcul Trandafirilor restaurant. Although the entrance seems to face Piața Lahovari, the rear courtyard hides a monumental stone staircase leading to sumptuous salons: the Chess Room, the Edison Room, the Hall of Mirrors and Chandeliers and the Zodiac Room, lit by a stained-glass window with all the signs of the zodiac.
