Plumbuita Monastery
Plumbuita Monastery, dedicated to the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, stands on a small rise on the right bank of the Colentina. It was begun in 1560 by Petru cel Tânăr and completed by Mihnea Turcitul; after the destruction of 1595 and the fire of 1614, Matei Basarab rebuilt it from the ground up in 1647, adding the Princely House and defensive walls. Bucharest's first printing press operated here from 1573. The name comes from the church's lead (plumb) roof, and the bell tower was built in 1802–1806, after the 1802 earthquake.
