Radu Vodă Monastery

On Radu Vodă hill, inhabited since prehistoric times, the first church is attributed to Mihnea cel Rău, while the monastery was founded by Alexandru II Mircea and endowed by his son, Mihnea Turcitul; the first library in Bucharest operated here at that time. In 1595 the troops of Sinan Pasha used the church as a mosque and set it on fire as they withdrew, and Radu Mihnea rebuilt it from the ground up. In 1875 a large part of the precinct was demolished by decision of Titu Maiorescu, the minister of religious affairs. Restored between 1969 and 1974, the church houses the tomb of Patriarch Justinian Marina.
