Apostol Tabaci Church

Apostol Church in Tabaci, on Mircea Vodă Boulevard, counts the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul among its dedications. The district took its name from the tanners (tabaci) relocated here by a princely order of 1672–1673, and the present church, set on a mound, was built in 1763–1765, its founder being a captain at the court of Constantin Mavrocordat. It was enlarged in 1864, and the murals were redone in oil in 1894, with the participation of Gheorghe Tattarescu. In 1987–1989 it was threatened with demolition, and then with being hidden behind apartment blocks, whose construction was halted only after 1990.
