St. Elijah Church – Rahova

St. Elijah Church – Rahova stands on the site of Gorgănel Church, founded in 1706 by Safta, daughter of Constantin Brâncoveanu, and destroyed by the 1802 earthquake. The present Neoclassical building, with a broad, low tower, was erected in 1837–1838 on the initiative of the vornic Fotache Știrbei, which was carried on after his death. The interior was painted by Gheorghe Tattarescu in 1874. In 1984, when Unirii Boulevard was laid out, the surrounding buildings were demolished, and the church, saved by the protests of the priest and the parishioners, was moved about 50 meters and hidden behind apartment blocks.
