Antim Monastery

Antim Monastery was founded by Metropolitan Antim Ivireanul and built between 1713 and 1715, on the site of a wooden church dedicated to St. Nicholas. The precinct was designed like a fortress, with the church in the middle and cells along the sides; the church, on a trefoil plan, has carved stone frames and rosettes and an oak door attributed to the founder. In 1912 the Palace of the Holy Synod was added, with its library. After 1945 the “Rugul Aprins” (Burning Bush) circle gathered here; its members were imprisoned by the communists. In 1985 the synodal palace was rotated and moved, and the kitchen and part of the cells were demolished.
