White Church – Postăvari (lost)

The White Church – Postăvari, also known as St. Nicholas Monastery of Pâlcov, was one of the oldest places of worship in Bucharest. Its first mention links it to Prince Alexandru Aldea (1431–1436), who repaired it because it had become “impoverished and weakened”. The noblewoman Caplea, wife of the postelnic (chamberlain) Ghiorma, rebuilt it in 1558–1559, dedicated it to the Simonos Petras Monastery on Mount Athos and was buried here; in 1635 it was a metochion of Mihai Vodă Monastery. A historic monument, the church was demolished in March 1984 for the construction of the Civic Center.
