Holy Apostles Church

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul stands on the site of a 16th-century wooden monastery known as “of Târnovo”, after the Bulgarian monastery to which it had been dedicated. The masonry church was built by Matei Basarab, and Ștefan Cantacuzino added the bell tower, the porch and the carved stone portal; the 1715 inscription is framed by portraits of the founders. Badly affected by the earthquakes of 1802 and 1838, it lost its three masonry towers, which were replaced by a single wooden one. It escaped the demolitions of the 1980s, but remained hidden behind the apartment blocks on Națiunile Unite Boulevard.
