Târca – Vitan Church

The church, dedicated to the Ascension, was built in the Vitan district, near the left bank of the Dâmbovița, by the serdar Radu (Răducanu) Poenaru and his wife Natalia, and was completed before July 1820, the date of the first inscription. The name “Târca” is said to come from a nickname in the founder's family, while “Vitan” recalls the cattle (vite) that once grazed in the marshy area. After the founders' deaths, the church fell into ruin and was closed in 1912, but with money raised through public subscription and with the help of the Metropolitanate it was repaired and painted, reopening in 1915.
