Water mill · sec. al XIX-lea

Vitan Mills

Morile Vitan were the water mills on the Dâmbovița by the Vitan neighborhood, where the river left old Bucharest toward the southeast. Around 1849, the mill here belonged to the logothete Iancu Văcărescu, who offered to rent it to the City Council for 400 galbeni (gold coins) a year; it also had a spacious granary. The mill dams silted up the riverbed and caused floods, so the law passed in 1865, on the initiative of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, required the abolition of the mills in the city, from Grozăvești to Vitan and Tânganu. The measure was completed only with the channeling of the Dâmbovița at the end of the 19th century.
