Foișor Church

Foișor Church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, was built as the chapel of the houses of Lady Smaranda, wife of Nicolae Mavrocordat; the inscription of November 1745 marks the completion of the work. The houses were linked to Văcărești Monastery, across marshy ground, by a wooden bridge with a foișor (lookout pavilion), which gave its name to the neighborhood and to the church. In 1888–1889 the porch was enclosed with glass, and the old frescoes were covered with oil paintings by Gheorghe Tattarescu. In the 1980s, the architect who was redeveloping the area deliberately left it out of the plans shown to Ceaușescu, sparing it from demolition.
