Old Coffeehouse

The Old Coffeehouse (Cafeneaua Veche), on Covaci Street near Piața Sfântul Anton, is considered the oldest documented coffeehouse in Bucharest. In 1781 the Armenian Ștefan Altîntop received permission from Prince Alexandru Ipsilanti to open a coffeehouse near the Princely Court, in exchange for 10 thalers a year; the establishment is attested in documents in 1812. In the 19th century it became a meeting place for personalities such as Mihai Eminescu and Ion Luca Caragiale; Eminescu, an editor at the newspaper “Timpul”, whose offices were next door, is said to have been a loyal customer.
