Bărăția Church

Bărăția, dedicated to St. Mary of Graces, is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Bucharest: in the 17th century, Bulgarian Franciscan friars had built a wooden church here. The repair of the church, promised in 1716 by Ștefan Cantacuzino, was carried out with money donated by Emperor Leopold I and Prince Nicolae Mavrocordat. The Great Fire of 1847 consumed the church and the tower, and the present building dates from 1848, rebuilt with the support of the imperial court in Vienna; the great bell was cast in 1855 at the expense of Franz Joseph. In 1948 most of the complex was confiscated by the communists.
