Choral Temple

The Choral Temple, the largest synagogue in Bucharest, was built at the initiative of the Community of the Modern Israelite Rite, on land bought in 1857 in the Mahalaua Stelei district. The design by the Viennese architects I. Enderle and Gustav Freiwald, in the Moorish-Byzantine style, reproduces the Tempelgasse Synagogue in Vienna; the foundation stone was laid in July 1864. In 1866, before its inauguration, the building was set on fire by protesters opposed to granting citizenship to Jews; after repairs, to which Prince Carol I also contributed, it was inaugurated in 1867. It was renovated in 1932 and 1945.
