Stelea Church (lost)

On the small elliptical square on Stelea Spătarul Street stood, for almost three centuries, the Stelea church and monastery, from which the whole neighborhood took its name. After the princely court moved from Târgoviște to Bucharest, the church was raised, after 1626, to the rank of metropolitan see. The lands donated by the founder gradually passed out of the monastery's possession, so that by the beginning of the 19th century only a simple church remained. Destroyed once again by the Great Fire of 1847, which consumed the entire neighborhood, it was finally torn down in 1850.
