St. George Old Church

On this site on Calea Moșilor there was a monastery as early as 1492, and tradition says that between 1545 and 1575 it was the seat of the metropolitans of Wallachia. The complex was destroyed by Ottoman troops in 1595; the church burned in 1718, was rebuilt in 1724, damaged by the earthquakes of 1802 and 1838 and destroyed by the Great Fire of 1847. Hastily rebuilt by the parishioners and demolished in 1875, it was replaced by the present church, consecrated in 1881 and painted by Gheorghe Pompilian, with towers and an iconostasis in the Ukrainian Baroque style.
