Great Synagogue

The Great Synagogue, on Vasile Adamache Street, was built in 1845–1846 by the community of Ashkenazi Jews who had come from Poland, and was originally called the Polish Synagogue; it was inaugurated on Rosh Hashanah in 1847. It owes its present form to the alterations of 1903, and in 1936 the interior was repainted in the Rococo style. Damaged by the 1940 earthquake and ransacked by the Legionnaires in January 1941, it was repaired in 1945. In the 1980s it was surrounded by apartment blocks that hide it from view, and since 1991 it has housed the Holocaust Museum of Romania.
