Cenușa Crematorium

The Cenușa Crematorium, on a hill in Tineretului Park, was built at the initiative of the Cenușa Society, founded in 1923, to a design by the architect Duiliu Marcu. Work began in 1925, and the building, in an eclectic style with Byzantine, Syrian and Egyptian influences, was inaugurated unfinished on 25 January 1928, when the first cremation also took place. The finishing work was completed in 1934 under the direction of Ioan D. Trajanescu; the main staircase is flanked by the statues “Grief” and “Hope” by Ioan Iordănescu. By 2002, when cremations ceased, the crematorium had carried out nearly 60,000 cremations.
