Episcopiei Church (metochion of the Bishopric of Râmnic)

On the land where the garden of the Romanian Athenaeum lies today, Mihai Cantacuzino began buying plots after 1766 to build a church and a school for poor children; the church, dedicated to the Holy Forty Martyrs, was ready in 1768. In the autumn of 1775, the founder dedicated it to the Bishopric of Râmnic as a metochion, hence the name Biserica Episcopiei (the Bishopric's Church), which the neighboring street has also kept. Deprived of income, the church fell into ruin and was demolished between 1861 and 1864; the Episcopiei Garden was laid out on its site and incorporated into the Athenaeum's garden in 1888.
