White Church

The White Church on Calea Victoriei, dedicated to St. Nicholas, dates from the 18th century; its founders were the priest Neagu Darvas and the noblewomen Rada and Visa. Excavations in 2012 uncovered the walls of an older church, whose altar lay beneath today's pronaos. The oil painting was done in 1873 by Gheorghe Tattarescu, who also painted the icons on the iconostasis. The iconostasis, a valuable work of wood carving, comes from a metochion of the Bishopric of Râmnic that stood on the site of today's Romanian Athenaeum.
