Olteni Church

The church of the Olteni neighborhood, on the street of the same name, is mentioned as a wooden church in a document from 1696, from the time of Constantin Brâncoveanu. In 1722 it was rebuilt in masonry by Nicolae, the archpriest of Bucharest, which is why it was called for a time the Archpriest's Church. In 1821 the arnăuți (Albanian mercenaries) of Atanase Himariotul barricaded themselves inside, and the Turks set it on fire; it was repaired in 1822, then rebuilt from the ground up in 1865 and painted by Gheorghe Tattarescu. Although it had been proposed for translocation, it was demolished on 12 June 1987 for the apartment blocks of the new Mircea Vodă Boulevard.
