Popa Soare Church

Popa Soare Church, on Burghele Street, was built in 1745 by the Buzău merchant Ene Boldescu, also known as Master Iane the merchant; it owes its name to a priest in its old pomelnic (list of names commemorated in prayer). It has kept its original trefoil plan, with an enlarged porch and a nave covered by a dome; of its two wooden towers, the one over the nave was removed in 1940–1942. The realist-style oil painting was done around 1880 by Anton Serafim, an apprentice of Gheorghe Tattarescu, and the stained-glass windows were made in Vienna in 1924. It was repaired after the earthquakes of 1838, 1940 and 1977.
