St. Stephen Church – Călărași

St. Stephen Church on Calea Călărași was begun in 1764 by Prince Ștefan Racoviță and Lady Teodora and completed by the clucer Stoica on 25 September 1768, according to the inscription. Damaged by the 1838 earthquake, it burned in the Great Fire of 1847 and was rebuilt, and after the 1977 earthquake it was restored once again. Small and in the post-Brâncovenesc style, it has an octagonal bell tower with colonnettes on its edges, a rarely preserved type. On the facades, painted medallions depict, alongside saints, Plato, Aristotle and two sibyls, shown with halos.
