St. Mina Church – Vergu

The church takes its name from the boyar Vergu (Vergo), a cupbearer around 1695, whom Constantin Brâncoveanu used on diplomatic missions to Constantinople and who lived in this part of the city. The first masonry church was built in 1724–1725, but was badly affected by the earthquakes of 1838 and 1853 and by the Great Fire of 1847. The rebuilt church was completed in 1874, the porch was added in 1900, and after the 1940 earthquake the church was strengthened to plans by Constantin Joja. It keeps relics and a wonder-working icon of St. Mina.
