Stejarul Church

Stejarul Church, dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, stood behind the Royal Palace, where the Sala Palatului complex now stands. Like most of the city's old churches, it was at first made of wood and was rebuilt in brick in the summer of 1763. Badly damaged by the 1838 earthquake, it lay neglected for a long time, until Carol I restored it when the work on the palace was finished; the neighboring royal villa, “Vila Stejarul” (the Oak Villa), took its name from it. It came through the German bombings untouched, but was torn down in 1959, despite the opposition of Patriarch Justinian, to make room for Sala Palatului.
