St. Ionică Church (lost)

St. Ionică Church, also known in the city as St. Ionică-Moldoveni or St. John the Small, stood near the Royal Palace, in the area now occupied by the Sala Palatului complex. It was founded in 1759 and rebuilt in 1854; its nickname came from the Moldavian families settled nearby. By 1937 services were no longer held in it, and in 1939 it was demolished to enlarge the palace courtyard and lay out a park – an act that many Bucharest residents regarded as sacrilege.
