George Grigorie Cantacuzino Fountain

Located in Carol I Park, the George Grigorie Cantacuzino Fountain was built in 1870 at the expense of the capital's mayor, George Grigorie Cantacuzino, to a design by the architect Alexandru Freiwald and with sculptures by Karl Storck. It replaced the monumental fountain built in the 18th century on Dealul Filaret by Metropolitan Filaret II, a pavilion with 12 bronze spouts, each beneath a sculpted sign of the zodiac, which was pulled down after it had fallen into disrepair. The new Neoclassical fountain, set on blocks imitating rocks, was famous for its pure water; today the water is no longer drinkable.
