Church moved on rails · 1594; translatată 1985

Mihai Vodă Monastery

Founded by Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave), the church was built in 1594 in the middle of a walled precinct, like a fortress, on the hill that bears his name today. Over time, the complex served as a princely residence, a military hospital, a medical school and the headquarters of the State Archives. In 1985, when the ensemble was due to disappear to make way for the Civic Center, the church was moved a distance of 289 meters and lowered by more than 6 meters, while the annexes and the precinct wall were torn down. Today the church and its bell tower stand hidden behind the apartment blocks on Sapienței Street.
