Lost church · 1652; demolată 1896
Sărindar Monastery
The monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, was built in stone by Matei Basarab in place of a small wooden church belonging to the Cocorăști boyars; the 1652 inscription called it the last of the 40 churches promised by the prince, and the name comes from the Greek “saranda”, “forty”. Rebuilt under Constantin Brâncoveanu and repaired after the 1802 earthquake, it was badly damaged in 1838, and ill-judged 19th-century restorations weakened it. It was demolished in 1896; the National Military Circle now stands on its site.
