Monument to the Heroes of the Air
The monument in the center of Piața Aviatorilor is dedicated to the pilots, military or civilian, who laid the foundations of Romanian aviation. Lidia Kotzebue's design was chosen after a long competition, and the statues were modeled by the young sculptor Iosif Fekete, to whom some critics attribute almost the entire work. 20 m tall, the monument has at the top of its obelisk a 5 m statue of a flying man with outspread wings, and at its base three fallen aviators; the names of the airmen who died are engraved on bronze plaques. It was unveiled on 20 July 1935, in the presence of King Carol II.
