Monument to the Heroes of the Fatherland
The Monument to the Heroes of the Fatherland, in front of the National Defense University on Eroilor Boulevard, was inaugurated on 17 August 1957, when a plaster model still stood on the pedestal, the statues being cast in bronze only in 1958. The 9 m tall statuary group depicts an infantryman holding an oak branch, an aviator and a sailor, and is the work of a team of sculptors from the Army Fine Arts Studio, coordinated by Colonel Marius Butunoiu. On either side, two large high reliefs in white stone depict moments from Romania's history, from the conquest of Dacia to World War II.
