Statue of Carol Davila

The statue of General Doctor Carol Davila, founder of higher medical education in Romania, stands in front of the Palace of the Faculty of Medicine. The idea arose at the first national medical congress, in October 1884, less than two months after Davila's death. Cast in bronze at the School of Arts and Crafts after a model by Carol Storck, the 2 m statue depicts him in a general's uniform, with one arm held behind his back – a detail reflecting the stiffened joint left by articular rheumatism. It was inaugurated on 12 October 1903, together with the faculty building.
