Monument to the Medical Corps Heroes

The monument, the work of the Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli, was erected in 1932 in Piața Operei, during the term of mayor Dem. I. Dobrescu, in memory of the doctors, medical orderlies and volunteer nurses on the fronts of World War I. On the marble pedestal, a band of high reliefs shows scenes from field hospitals and the battlefield; one of them probably features Queen Marie as a nurse, alongside her children. Four columns support the bronze statuary group: a fallen hero, an allegorical female figure and a medical orderly. Dismantled for the metro works, it was reinstated in 1981 on the same spot.
