Carol-Hunchiar Mosque

The Carol-Hunchiar Mosque is the oldest mosque in Bucharest. The first building was erected at the order of King Carol I on a small island in Carol Park, on the occasion of the 1906 Jubilee Exhibition, as a sign that Dobruja belonged to Romania and as a mark of respect for the Turks and Tatars who had fought in the Romanian army. In 1959 the communist regime demolished it to make room for the Monument to the Heroes, but in 1960 it rebuilt the mosque outside the park, on Constantin Mănescu Street, out of a desire to maintain good relations with Muslim countries.
