St. George Church - Plevna

The church on Calea Plevnei was rebuilt in 1906–1908 with the support of the parishioners, especially the family of Elisabeta and Petrache Nichifor, in memory of their daughter Marioara, whose bust stands in front of the church; the consecration took place in 1909. On its site there was an older church, built by the brothers Vasile and Chiriac, nicknamed “the freemasons” (farmazonii), the name under which the church also appears on old maps. Damaged by the 1940 earthquake, it was consolidated in 1943. The courtyard holds the common grave of the firefighters who fell on 13 September 1848 in the battle of Dealul Spirii.
