St. Stephen “Cuibul cu Barză” Church

The clucer Dona and his wife, Zamfira, built the church around 1760, dedicating it to St. Stephen the Archdeacon. In 1898 the architect T. Dobrescu enclosed the old porch and added a new one, with three ogee arches, and the priest-painter Vasile Damian painted the church in the Neo-Byzantine style. Barely consolidated after the 1977 earthquake, it was proposed for demolition to make way for an apartment block; on 22 February 1987, engineer Eugen Iordăchescu's team moved it 16 m to the south. Today it stands in the courtyard of a ten-story apartment block, hidden from view from Știrbei Vodă and Berzei Street.
