Luigi Cazzavillan Monument and Fountain

The monument-fountain was made in 1905 by the sculptor Filip Marin in memory of Luigi Cazzavillan, a journalist of Italian origin and former volunteer in Garibaldi's army, who came to Romania in 1877 as a war correspondent and founded the newspaper “Universul” in 1884. The surrounding square was laid out in the Italian manner, with circular and diagonal paths lined with columnar trees. At the base of the pedestal, bronze cupids and cherubs – one of them holding the newspaper “Universul” – and four dolphins serving as water spouts complete the ensemble. The fountain and the square were restored in 2004–2005 on the basis of historical documents.
