Popa Tatu Church (Fântâna Boului)

Popa Tatu Church, near Cișmigiu, was long known as the church “of Fântâna Boului” (the Ox's Well), after a 17th-century well where shepherds watered their cattle. The masonry church was built in place of a wooden one, begun in 1752 and consecrated in 1774; its founder was the ban Mihai Cantacuzino, who dedicated it to Sărindar Monastery. Its present name comes from the priest Tatu, who around 1810 built a house and a public bath for the poor. It was badly damaged by the 1940 earthquake and then rebuilt. It has three dedications: the Dormition, St. Nicholas and St. John the Baptist.
