Last Sentinel of the Capital Monument
The small obelisk, designed by the French architect Ernest Doneaud and erected in 1921 through the efforts of the “Graves of the Heroes Fallen in the War” Society, commemorates the cavalry sergeant Nicolae Păianu, who fell on 22 November 1916 in the fighting to defend Bucharest. A native of Călărași, he was among the troops left behind to cover the government's withdrawal to Iași. Until 2007 the monument stood at the intersection of Aerogării Boulevard and the DN1 national road; when it was moved so the road could be widened, the sergeant's remains were found beneath it and were reburied under the new site, in front of Băneasa Airport.
