Statue of Ion Heliade-Rădulescu

The marble statue of Ion Heliade-Rădulescu was made by the sculptor Ettore Ferrari, commissioned by the City Hall, and unveiled on 21 November 1880, nine years after the death of the founder of the Romanian Academy. Placed in Piața Universității, then called Piața Academiei, it shows him in the pose of an orator, with his head slightly bowed and a book in his left hand. Alexandru Vlahuță dedicated a poem to it, and Bucharest wit responded with an epigram. In 2010 the statue was temporarily moved to Izvor Park because of the construction of an underground car park, and it returned to its place on 5 May 2012.
