Monument to the Firefighter Heroes
The bronze monument, the work of the sculptor Wladimir Hegel, was inaugurated on Dealul Spirii, in front of the Army Arsenal, on 13 September 1901. It is dedicated to the firefighters led by Captain Zăgănescu who, on 13 September 1848, confronted the Ottoman troops sent to crush the revolution; 17 of the fighters who were still alive attended the inauguration. Erected by public subscription, it was dismantled in 1984 for the construction of the House of the People and moved in 1990 to the intersection of Calea 13 Septembrie and Izvor Street, in front of the present-day JW Marriott hotel.
